Jackie La Rueは50年代初めにThe Five Wingsで活動したシンガーで、このグループは55年にKingレコードから１枚のシングルをリリースし解散している。The Five Wingsに在籍したメンバーのうちの２人がThe Dubsを結成している。Jackie La Rueは、60年にThe Starlites（Alton Thomas・John Felix・Billy Montgomery）に合流し、Jackie and The Starlitesとなる。グループの大ヒットValerieはFuryレコード（Bobby Robinson設立）からリリースされた、ソウルに満ちたバラードで、全米チャートには入らなかったものの大きなローカルヒットとなった。63年にFuryが倒産し、グループはMascotへ移籍し60年代なかごろまで活動を続けた。Jackie La Rueは60年代末にドラッグにより死去している。
