54年に結成されPhillyレコードに在籍したThe Cavaliersが母体となっている。The Sensationsはトップ40Ｒ＆Ｂヒットに２曲を送り込み、56年にAtcoレコードからリリースしたPlease Me. Disc jockeyが最大のヒットである。61年に Yvonne Mills Baker・Alphonso Howell・Richard Curtain・Sam Armstrong というメンバーとなり、グループのスタイルを変えていった。62年にLet me in がArgoかからリリースされ、Ｒ＆Ｂチャート第２位・ポップチャート第４位というビッグヒットとなった。
