他の多くのグループ同様に学校・ダンスパーティ・教会・街角などで活動を始めた。50年にNorman Smith・Nathaniel Jacksonは50年に加入している。Norman SmithはそれまでにThe Buccaneers(のちにThe Universとなったグループ)に加入していた。The Keystonersは何度もメンバーチェンジをくり返しており、54年にはNorman Smith・Al Singleton・Goliath Jamesの3人が新しいグループを結成している。グループのマネージャとなった Herman GillespieはThe TurbansのSister Sookeyを作曲した人物である。グループはNorman Smithの作曲した The magic kissでG&Mレコードのオーディションを受け、この作品がデビューシングルとなった。しかし初版はノイズが混入したために親会社のColombiaは製造を中止した。すぐに再プレスされたが、B面がAfter I proposeに差し換えられEpicレコードからリリースされた。またTalmadge AllenはSleep and dreamにのみ参加したのちグループを去り、Mitch Jaksonが加入したがすでに大きなヒットは出せなくなっていた。82年になり再結成した。
