初期のヴォーカルグループの中でも絶大な人気を誇ったLarksですが、オリジナルアルバムはありません。写真は80年代にリリースされたLPです。RelicがApollo盤として発売しました。タイトル曲は名曲の一つですよね。

The Selah Jubilee Singersとして活動を始める。彼等は33～44年にかけてDeccaでレコーディングを行っている。40年代中頃、彼等はEugene Mumford（The Four Internesに在籍）をThe Selah Jubilee Singersへ加入させるが、彼は間もなく、白人女性レイプ未遂の容疑で告訴され収監される。49年に恩赦で解放され、Thurmon Ruthの新しいグループThe Jubilatorsに正式加入する。メンバーは、Allen Bunn・Raymond 'Pee Wee' Barnes・David McNeil。50年に始まった彼らのレコーディングは、The Jubilators（Regal）・The Selah Singers（Jubilee）・The FourBarons（Savoy）・The Southern Harmonaires（Apollo）と色々な名前でレコーディングをする。Apollo時代に名前をThe Five Larksに変える。最初のシングルは51年に発表したジャンプナンバーCoffee, cigarettes and tears・My heart cries for you。続く第2弾シングル Hopefully yours・When I leave these prison wallsを発表。このナンバーはEugene Mumfordが刑務所で書いた曲。次のシングルMy reverieがようやくヒットし、彼等の名前が有名になっていく。彼らは数々の黒人向けのテレビショーに出演、Arthur Godfreyのタレントスカウトという番組でTennessee waltzを熱唱している。続いて彼等はMy lost love、Darlin・In my lonely room・I live true to youと次々新曲をリリースしヒットの記録を樹立してゆく。しかし52年以降ヒットがなく、Eugene MumfordはThe Golden Gate Quartetに参加するためグループを脱退、一時はゴスペル界にいたものの、54年に再加入している。この頃のメンバーは、Eugene Mumford・Orville Books（19.01.27～97.08.30）・Isaiah Bing・David Bowers。彼等はApollo傘下の新設レーベルLloyd'sから6枚のングルを発表するが、いずれも評判にはならずに、55年に解散する。Eugene Mumfordはその後、The Serenaders（Old Town）へ加入し、Stardust（57）・Deep purple（57）の2本のヒットを得る。70年代には、Eugene Mumfordはソロシンガーとして独立する。
