本文にもあるようにこのあとも現在まで脈々と同名のグループはメンバーを次々と交代しては活動を続けています。Doo WopマニアにとってはデビューのKing盤の荒削りな未完成なサウンドに魅力を感じるようです。

ジェファーソン高校に通うCurtis Williamsが51年に結成した The Flamingos（シカゴのグループではない）には Richard Berry（のちにThe Flairsを結成）・Cornelius Gunter（後にThe Flairs・The Hollywood Blue Jaysを結成、Arther Lee Maye and The Crownsでも歌っている）・Gaynel Hodge（のちにThe Hollywood Flamesに加入）・兄弟のAlex Hodgeの5人のメンバーがいた。53年１月にグループから抜けたCornell Gunther・Alex Hodgeは、ロサンゼルスでHerb Reed・Joe Jeffersonを加えて新たなグループを結成する。Alex Hodgeの発案でThe Plattersと命名した。レコードを出して盛んにＤＪにプレイされるようにとPlatter（大皿）としたという。この頃はCornell GuntherやHerb Reedがおもにリードを歌い、いくつかのコンテストにも優勝し、やがてThe Ebony ShowcaseというTＶ番組に出演しOld McDonald had a farmを歌っている。間もなくDavid Lynchがグループを抜け、Joe Jeffersonが加入。次いでCornell Guntherが抜けTony Williamsが加入した。Tony Williamsはニュージャージー出身で自分のグループや、姉のLindaとその仲間らと活動していた。この頃、Federalとレコーディング契約を結んでいる。同53年にはBuck Ram（1907.11.21～91.01.01・シカゴで活躍していた作曲家）とのマネージメント契約も結んだ。契約時のメンバーはHerb Reed・David Lynch・Tony Williams・Alex Hodgeであった。54年の初頭、Buck RamがAlex Hodgeの家を訪ねた時、Shirley Gunther（Cornell Guntherの姉妹）と一緒に練習していたZola Taylor（ともにThe Queensのメンバー）を非常に気に入り、グループに加えることした。彼女の加入はビジュアル的にもサウンド的にもユニークで新鮮なグループへと作り上げられていった。1954年8月、Alex Hodgeがグループを抜けPaul Robiが加入している。当時のBuck RamはThe Penguins（Earth Angelがヒット中であった）もマネージメントしており、ちょうどMercuryとの契約交渉の最中であった。Buck RamはThe Plattersとも契約させたたかったがMercuryはThe Penguinsとの契約を求めていたため、Buck Ramは両方のグループをとるように強く主張し、Mercuryもこれに同意する。55年に契約が成立したが、移籍当初MercuryはEarth angelでヒットを飛ばしたThe Penguinsのプロモーションに力をいれておりThe Plattersにはあまり期待していなかった。The PlattersはKing時代のOnly youを再録し、これがMercuryでのデビュー曲となる。55年7月にＲ＆Ｂチャートに登場し、見事ナンバーワンを獲得する。11月に発表したThe Great pretenderもそれ以上にヒット、55～61年にかけて着実にチャートを賑わすトップスターとなった。56年、Buck RamはThe Plattersを法人登録し、The Five Platters, Inc.を設立する。それぞれのメンバーはBuck Ramとの契約により、名前の使用権は会社に譲渡するという条件で、見返りとして会社はそれぞれのメンバーに株を与えるという内容であった。グループ内のトラブルを防ぎ、常時補充メンバーを用意し、メンバーそれぞれが契約するという形態でThe Plattersを維持するという方法であった。57年初頭からはワールドツアーも行っている。60年、リードボーカルのTony WilliamsはThe Plattersから独立しRepriseからソロシンガーとして再出発することになる。Sonny TurnerがThe Plattersのリードボーカルとして加入、66年にはDavid Lynch・Herb Reed・Sonny Turner（39～）・Nate Nelson・Sandra Dawnというメンバーとなっている。この年にグループはMercuryを離れMusicorへ移籍、I love you 1000 timesを５月にヒットさせている。この時期のメンバーの中にNathaniel NelsonとPaul Williamsという人物がおり、この二人は元The Flamingosのメンバーである。67年にSweet sweet lovin'でヒットを出すが、以降大きなヒットはでていない。69年、The Plattersのメンバーはすべての所有株を手放し、解散状態となっていた。Buck RamはSonny TurnerにかわるMonroe Powellと契約、まったく別のメンバーによるThe Plattersを結成させ、以降25年以上にわたりグループ・会社の経営を続けている。The Plattersは400以上の歌をレコーディングし、8900万枚以上のレコードを売った。91以上の国で公演を行い、世界中から230以上賞を受け取っている。Rock Around The Clock・The Girl Can't Help It・Europe By Night・Girls Town・Carnival Rockといった27本のＲ＆Ｒ映画にも出演し22ケ国以上で上映された。90年にThe PlattersはRock and Roll Hall of Fameに選出されている。オリジナルメンバーだったHerb ReedがThe Plattersの使用権についての訴訟を起こした。97年９月29日にフィデラル高等裁判所（ラスベガス・ネバダ州）は、Herb ReedがThe Plattersを使う権利を認めると裁決し、99年４月２日の上訴判決でもこれを支持された。
