December

Climate

December is the month to start preparing for the next fuchsia season.
In December we can still enjoy many warm days here in the "Seto Inland Climate Zone." In addition, the climate is getting warmer year by year.

The JMA (Japan Meteorological Agency) reported that the average temperature of December was 0.9oC higher than the normal average in the western part of Japan (which includes the Seto Inland Climate Zone).

While the month high recorded on the nearest AmeDAS is 15.2oC, the actual measurements on my balcony often exceed 20oC.
The actual day lows, too, are always few degrees higher than the AmeDAS measurements.

Toward the end of the month, however, the temperature occasionally dropped to about 3oC even on my balcony.

Fuchsias in December

In December, some fuchsias are still in bloom.

The photo on the right is Billy Green (nearly three years old), 50 cm (H) x 70 cm (W).

Protection and pruning

At the beginning of the month, I attached bubble wrap around the lower space of the potting bench to use it as a mini greenhouse.

The space serves to protect young tender plants against sudden temperature drop or a weather bomb.

At the end of the month, I pruned and repotted the Billy Green, and covered with bubble wrap and horticultural fleece, as shown on the right.

Machu Picchu
It is grown from a cutting.
Height: about 40cm.

Because Machu Picchu benefits so much from frequent pinching, I always encourage it to grow even during winter and pinch as many times as possible.
Clair de Lune
The plant is in a 15 cm dia. clay pot.

I pruned it hard to make it compact enough to be stored in the potting bench.

Tip/s I keep in mind is/are to:
  • Place the plants in full sun during winter to prevent lanky growth.
  • Ensure that the plants are protected from the cold wind.
  • Prune just above a new bud in the case of thin stems. If pruned beyond a point where new growth has not occurred yet, the cut stem can die back. Thicker stems are less prone to die-back.
Term/s:
  • AmeDAS - Automatic Meteorological Data Acquisition System installed by the Japan Meteorological Agency. A total of 13,000 AmeDASs are installed across Japan (as of January 2007). The measurement data are accessible via the Internet.
  • Weather bomb - A low pressure system whose pressure rapidly drops, causing strong winds and heavy rain or snow. An unwelcome visitor to your garden.
