January
Climate
The warm trend is continuing.
The day lows recorded by the nearest AmeDAS range from -04 - 6.2oC, and day highs, 8.4 - 12.6oC as of Jan. 29.
On my balcony, the actual day lows are 2 - 3oC higher, and day highs, 4oC higher than AmeDAS data.
I should be well prepared, though, to be able to bring my fuchsias indoors
at any time. Regret always comes after. I can't afford to freeze them.

Fuchsias in January
My fuchsias are protected with fleece and bubble wrap.
Fleece of Machu Picchu (center) can be removed on mild days.
Billy Green
Billy Green repotted at the end of December is raising new shoots.
Improvised mini greenhouse serves mainly for young cuttings.
The front cover is opened on sunny days.

Hanging pot is also covered with bubble wrap and fleece.
The fleece is opened on sunny days.
The plant can be pinched as it grows.
Wassernymph
Wassernymph is still in bloom.
It should be pruned for better shape but I can't do so because it is one
of the few plants adding colors to the balcony now.
I've been growing Wassernymph for years. It flowers during winter without
short-night treatment.
I wonder if Wassernymph might be less sensitive to night length, i.e. its
critical night length might be slightly longer than other long-day fuchsias.

Tip/s I keep in mind is/are to:
- Prevent the temperature difference between the day and night in the mini
greenhouse from becoming too large.
- Prevent the compost from freezing solid, as this will delay spring growth
and flowering.
- Avoid applying icy cold water.
Term/s:
- AmeDAS - Automatic Meteorological Data Acquisition System installed by
the Japan Meteorological Agency. A total of 13,000 AmeDASs are installed
across Japan (as of January 2007). The measurement data are accessible
via the Internet.
- Short-night treatment (long-day treatment) - To expose long-day plants
to a series of shortened dark periods to promote flower initiation.
- Flower initiation - The initiation of production of flowers.
- Critical night length - The length of darkness that must not be exceeded
by a long-day plant, or must be exceeded by a short-day plant, to initiate
flowering.
