May
Climate
May is the last month in the first half of the year to enjoy magellanica
types. Some magellanica types begin to wilt in June with the increase in
temperatures.
Fuchsias need to be watered twice a day, and have to be moved into the
shade. In the evening it is necessary to water fuchsias from the top using
a fine rose and to water the balcony floor, too, to cool down.
Fuchsias in May
Mini Rose and Machu Picchu (May 4)
Mini Rose produces a compact plant covered with many small flowers.
Individual flowers drops quite quickly, but new ones unfold one after another.
Machu Picchu is one of the best performers among my fuchsias.

Vincent van Gogh (May 25)
This lax, self-branching cultivar also starts flowering early in the season.

Lower leaves of triphylla hybrids are beginning to yellow.
Gartenmeister Bonstedt (May 5)
Bottom leaves are yellowing. The yellowing progresses upward, as the months
go by.
I've feeding one coffee spoon of Epsom salt diluted with 1.5 liter of water
once a week, but this doesn't appear to be effective enough.
Edit 2009: I have reached a conclusion that high temperature contributes
a lot to this problem and it's almost impossible to maintain lower leaves
in our outdoor climate.

Tip/s I keep in mind is/are to:
- Keep fuchsias in shade or part shade. The direct sunlight in May is too
strong.
- Daily feed fuchsias in bloom with a balanced
fertilizer diluted to a quarter of the recommended strength. I apply plain water
once a week to wash the soil of excessive nutrients.
- Resist the impulse to purchase fuchsias now. Fuchsias in a garden center
can already be damaged by high temperatures. It is important to carefully
examine the plant before purchasing.

- AmeDAS - Automatic Meteorological Data Acquisition System installed by
the Japan Meteorological Agency. A total of 13,000 AmeDASs are installed
across Japan (as of January 2007). The measurement data are accessible
via the Internet.
