March
Climate
March is a mixture of winter and spring. The mini greenhouse has to be
opend / closed according to the weather and temperature of the day.
As the culmination altitude of the sun increases, sunny areas decrease
on my south-facing balcony. Fuchsias have to be placed at a sunny spot,
i.e. near the front edge of the balcony.
March is the month to stop stopping. Because the temperature can rise severely at the beginning of May, pinching has to be scheduled to bloom fuchsias as early as possible.
March is also the time to start pest control.

Fuchsias in March
The photo on the right shows fuchsias in early March.
There are 13 cultivars and 2 species. The total number of plants are 26.
I have to reduce it before summer so that I can handle individual plants
more carefully.

On March 2, I applied granular pesticide "Bestguard" to control
aphids and whiteflies.
The pests that occur on my balcony include aphids, whiteflies, spider mites
and slugs.
Bestguard is a nitenpyram-based pesticide
The classic acephate-based pesticide shown on the right doesn't work on
the whitefly any more, although it is included in its application spectrum.
It is crucial to start controlling pests (whitefly in particular) early
in the spring. You'd end up with using a larger amount of pesticide, should
you attempt to control after a outbreak.
It's not practical to try to grow fuchsias pesticide-free. The best approach
is to try to achieve the optimal results with the minimum dosage.

Cleaning of Seramis
I'm using Seramis to make a drainage and water-retentive layer onto which
small clay pots are placed.
This helps to prevent the compost from drying up and increase air humidity.
Seramis granules have to be cleaned once every two or three months to remove
algae.
The right tray contains a shallow layer of new Seramis.
You can see the old Seramis clay granules covered with algae.
To remove the algae, you can fill the tray with water, add some chlorine
bleach and wait a day or so.
You can repeat the procedure to thoroughly clean. The cleaned granules are reusable.
March 24, I removed the protective bubble wrap and fleece.
The photo on the right is Machu Picchu, grown from a cutting taken in the
previous spring.
The bubble wrap can be washed and stored to be used again
in the next season.
My balcony will be soon brighten up with flowers.

Tip/s I keep in mind is are to:
- Apply appropriate pesticide early in the spring, especially to
control whiteflies.
Term/s:
- AmeDAS - Automatic Meteorological Data Acquisition System installed by the Japan Meteorological Agency. A total of 13,000 AmeDASs are installed across Japan (as of January 2007). The measurement data are accessible via the Internet.
