April
Climate
April is the month of reward.
New blooms unfold day by day, and sufficient temperature difference between
day and night promotes new growth. There is no need to worry about extreme
temperatures or root rot.
Fuchsias in April
Gartenmeister Bonstedt (Apr. 3)
Like other triphylla hybrids, it tends to drop its lower leaves.
I've tried several preventive measures (ex. Epsom salt), but the problem
persists.
Edit 2009: I have reached a conclusion that high temperature contributes
a lot to this problem and it's almost impossible to maintain lower leaves
in our outdoor climate.
Machu Picchu (Apr. 15)
It begins to grow vigorously as daytime temperature rises consistently
above 20oC.
Its heat resistance makes it a good plant for hot climates in Japan.

Mini Rose (Apr. 15)
Grown from a small plant purchased the previous spring.
It is short-jointed and easy to shape.
F. procumbens (Apr. 20)
It is three years old or so.
This species fuchsia is easy to grow and recommendable in hot climate.

Cuttings, arrival of orders and etc.
April provides the last opportunity for taking cuttings.
Some Japanese books recommend taking cuttings of fuchsias in June, which
I think applies only to cooler northern regions. In the typical climate
of Japan, temperatures are too high in June to start propagation by cutting.
The photo shows the cuttings taken on April 18. The lid is to be closed
to retain high humidity.
Compost: potting mix for alpine flowers plus moss peat.
I ordered one of the Angel's Earring series for the first time in years.
I'll test this cultivars for heat-resistance.
On April 21, I removed the bubble wrap from the potting bench.
On this day, the temperature rose up to 24oC. I wish spring would last year round and summer would never come!

Tip/s I keep in mind is/are to:
- Regularly water fuchsias to maintain the soil moistness. Fuchsias grow
most vigorously in April here and require a lot of water.
- Daily feed fuchsias in bloom with a balanced fertilizer diluted to a quarter
of the recommended strength. I apply plain water once a week to wash the
soil of excessive nutrients.
Term/s:
- Epsom salt - Magnesium sulfate heptahydrateor MgSO47H2O
Can be purchased at a pharmacy (in Japan).
Mg is a part of chlorophyll and essential for plants. Because Mg migrates
upward, the deficiency of it appears in the lower leaves of plants in the
form of yellowing leaves.
- Angel's Earring - Series of fuchsias bred by the City of Nishinomiya, Hyogo
pref. and Suntory (a well known liquor maker in Japan).
- AmeDAS - Automatic Meteorological Data Acquisition System installed by
the Japan Meteorological Agency. A total of 13,000 AmeDASs are installed
across Japan (as of January 2007). The measurement data are accessible
via the Internet.
