February - 1
Note on correction

You'll find a fuchsia name "Elfriede Ott" is scratched in a following
section. I purchased the plant as Elfriede Ott, but it turned out to be
misnamed. Unfortunately, the correct name of it remains unknown.

Climate
It's really too warm for February and I'm beginning to concern that the
summer temperature may rise at the same rate. This is the very last thing
I wish.
February is the month to start repotting fuchsias which have woken from
dormancy.

Fuchsias in February
The photo on the right shows fuchsias in the morning on February 2.
They were brought indoors the previous night, because a temperature below
freezing point was forecast.

Arrival of orders
Rooted cuttings arrived from a nursery on Feb. 6.
From left to right:
Elfriede Ott Unknown
- Whiteknight's Cheeky
- F.fulgens
The maximum temperature of the day was 18
oC.
It is important to examine the root conditions.

Then, I decided to transfer:
- Unnamed fuchsia to a clay pot of the same size (12 cm),
- Whiteknight's Cheeky to 9 cm pot (potting down),
- F. fulgens to 135. cm pot (potting on).
Potting media used were as shown below.
- For unknown fuchsia and F. fulgens : mixture of left + center.
- For Whiteknight's Cheeky: mixture of right + moss peat.

Tip/s I keep in mind is/are to:
- Purchase rooted cuttings in late autumn or early spring so that they can
be well established before summer. This allows me to take many cuttings
for "insurance" against summer loss.
- Sieve Kanuma, Hyuga or other granular soils before use to remove fine dust.
Term/s:
- Zeolite - It is said to be effective to prevent root rot.
- Kanuma soil - Granular horticultural soil from Kanuma region in Tochigi
Prefecture. Acid.
- Hyuga soil: Porous pumice-like granules from Miyazaki Prefecture. Harder
than Kanuma and thus is highly reusable.
- AmeDAS - Automatic Meteorological Data Acquisition System installed by the Japan Meteorological Agency. A total of 13,000 AmeDASs are installed across Japan (as of January 2007). The measurement data are accessible via the Internet.
