セルボーン案内２．セルボーンはどこにあるのでしょう
A GUIDE TO SELBORNE
セルボーンはどこにあるのでしょう。イギリス人でもその位置どころか名前すら知らない人がたくさんいます。地図で探しても普通の地図では見つけられません。どこにあってどんなところでしょうか。ギルバート・ホワイトが著書の第１ページに次のように書いてくれています。
Where is Selborne? Even English people do not know so much the position as the name of it. If you try to find it in an ordinary map, it may be impossible. Where is it and what place is it? Gilbet white wrote in the first page of his book as follows.

セルボーンの教区はハンプシャー州も極く東に寄り詰まった僻遠の土地で、サセクス州とは互いに境を接しており、更にサレー州へもほど遠くない処にあります。即ち緯度が５１度、ロンドンの西南方５０マイル、オールトンの町とピータースフィールドの町とのほぼ中間に位置しています。管内の土地が非常に広大であるため、この土地に隣接した教区が１２もあります。その１２のうち、２つはサセックス州内にあるもので、ツロトンとロゲートの２教区がそれであります。今これ等の隣接教区を南から始めて西の方へ次ぎ次ぎに数えあげますと、それはエムショット、ニュートン・ヴァレンス、ファリンドン、ハートレー・モーディト、グレート・ワールダム、キングスレー、ヘドレー、ブラムショット、トロットン、ロゲート、リス、グレータムという順序になります。(西谷退三の訳文：ただし、読みやすいようにかな使いや数字・漢字などは現代の横書き様式に変えてあります） The parish of Selborne lies in the extreme eastern corner of the county of Hampshire, bordering on the county of Sussex, and not far from the county of Surrey; is about fifty miles south-west of London, in latitude 51, and near midway between the towns of Alton and Peters field. Being very large and extensive, it abuts on twelve parishes, two of which are in Sussex, viz., Trotton and Rogate. If you begin from the south and proceed westward, the adjacent parishes are Emshot, Newton Valence, Faringdon, Harteley Mauduit, Great Ward le ham, Kingsley, Hedleigh, Bramshot, Trotton, Rogate, Lysse, and Greatham. これでだいたいの位置はおわかりでしょう。ところがそこへの交通機関については書いてくれていません。何しろ今から２００年以上も前に書かれた本です。蒸気機関車が発明されたのは１９世紀になってからです。この当時はロンドンから行くにしても歩くか馬に乗るしかなかったでしょう。でも今でもこの村には鉄道の駅はありません。車の運転に自信のある人はレンタカーという手もありますが、そうでない場合はウォータールー駅からオールトン行きの列車に乗るのが一番便利でしょう。オールトンが終点です。オールトンからはバスかタクシーを利用することになります。ヒースロー空港からなら別の方法もありますが、行き方についてはまた後で詳しく述べます。
Now you can know where Selborne is. But Gilbert White did not write how
to get there. The book was written more than 200 years ago.To walk or to
ride a horse must have been the way, beecause a steam locomotive was invented
in the 19th century. Even now there is no railway station in Selborne.
If you can drive, of course, you can use a rent-a-car, but the easiest
way for an ordinary traveler is to use a railway to Alton from Waterloo.
Alton is the last stop. From there you can use a taxi or a bus. If you
want to go to Selborne from Heathrow Airport, you use another way. I'll
write about it later.
