1. 「セルボーン」を知ってますか
Do you know SELBORNE?

　「セルボーン」を知ってますか。セルボーンはイギリスのハンプシャー州にある教区あるいは村の名前です。その名前は一般の人たちには聞きなれないところですが、ギルバート・ホワイトという牧師の名前を知っている人にはよく知られているところなのです。ギルバート・ホワイトはこの村で生まれ、後にセルボーン教区の副牧師になった人です。この村が大好きで人生のほとんどをこの村で過ごしました。そして『セルボーンの博物誌』という１冊の本を私達に残してくれたのです。この本は英文学上の重要な本の１冊になっています。

Do you know Selborne? Selborne is the name of a parish or a village in Hampshire, England. The name is not familiar among the public but well-known to those who know a clergyman named Gilbert White. He was born in this village and became a curate of Selborne parish. He loved this village and spent most of his life there. He left us a great book The Natural History of Selborne.　It is one of the classics of English literature.

    私をこの村に導いてくれたのは西谷退三（にしたにたいぞう）という人物でした。西谷退三は札幌農学校予備科を２年の途中で辞めて故郷に帰りました。それから７２才で死ぬまで読書と古美術などの趣味に生きた人です。彼は独自の考えに基づいて結婚はしませんでしたので子孫はいません。しかし、彼が後世に遺したのが『セルボーンの博物誌』の名訳と膨大な書籍でした。しかし、彼の翻訳が出版されたのは亡くなった１年後でした。
     It was a man named Nishitani-Taizo that lead me to this village. He left Sapporo Agricultural College Preliminary Couse (Hokkaido Unversity of today) in the middle of his second year and returned home. After that till his last day of 72 he spent almost all his life in reading and other hobbies. He never got married and he left no descendants, but he left us a excellent translation of The Narutal History of Selbore and a great number of books. But his translation was never published before his death.

　残念ながら会ったことはありませんが、彼は私の故郷の村の隣町に住んでいましたし、私がこの町の高校に入ったときにはまだ健在だったのです。しかしこんな人がこんなところに住んでいようとは思いもしませんでした。でもそれは私だけではありません。
      I have never met him, though he lived in the next town to my home village and was still alive when I entered the high school in the town. I had never dreamed a man like him was living there. But it was not only I who did not know what he was doing.

　彼が亡くなった翌年、１９５８年に、２００部だけ私家版として親友の森下雨村(有名な編集者で作家でもありました）が出版して友人・知人に配りました。そしてこのことで彼の生涯をかけた翻訳が徐々に知られるようになり、その３年後に市販本が東京の博友社という出版社から出されました。
     In 1958, a year after his death, only 200 copies were published as a private edition by his close friend, Morishita-Uson (once a famous editor and a writer), and only 200 copies were distributed among his friends and acquaintances. By and by the book was begun to be known to the public and three years later Hakuyu-sha, a publishing company in Tokyo, published it as a trade edition.

   私が西谷退三のこと知ったのはいつだったのかもう思い出せません。でも彼の名前とその本とセルボーンという地名はしっかりと頭の中に刻み込まれていました。「こんな田舎で人知れずこんな大業をなした人がいたのか」という賛嘆の念があったからでしょう。でも生物学あるいは博物学にに特に興味があったわけでもない私は彼の本を手に入れようと考えたことはありませんでした。
     Now I cannot remember when I knew about him. But his name, his book and the name of Selborne had never left my mind. It was because I admired what he had done in this remote town without being known to the world. At that time I had no idea to get and read his book, because I was not much intereted in biology or natural history.

    ところが亡くなった父の蔵書の中に西谷退三訳の『セルボーンの博物誌』(昭和３６年版）があるのを見つけました。それ以来何年も手元に置いてときどきページをめくっていましたが、通読するほどの熱はありませんでした。でも今度イギリスに行く機会があったらぜひセルボーンへ足を運んでみようとは思っていました。初めてイギリスへ行ったのが１９７０年でしたが、それ以来３０年を過ぎてもそのイギリスに行く機会は巡ってきませんでした。
      But one day I found Nishitani's book (1961 edition) on the bookshelf of my deceased father. Since then I kept it close to me and from time to time turned the pages though every time it ended up in a few pages. But it had been my dream to visit Selborne when I had a chance to go to England. I had visited England in 1970 but the chance to visit Engladn again did not come even 30 years later.

　その機会が２００２年４月に突然やってきました。高知県生態系保護協会（現在は生態系トラスト協会）の人達とナショナルトラストの勉強に通訳としてイギリスへ行くことを要請されました。その仕事を終ってからセルボーンに行けることになったのです。セルボーンには４日間滞在しましたが、私の宿のギブソン夫人は*「あなたはこの村で泊まった最初の日本人です」とうれしいことを言ってくれました。西谷退三も大正２３年から２４年にかけての滞英中にここ来ていますが、彼はここでは一泊もしなかったのです。

* それは事実ではないことが後にわかりました。

Suddenly it came in April in 2002, when I was asked to join a team from the Ecosystem Conservation Society-Kochi ( the Ecosystem Trust Society of today) as interpreter to study The National Trust. Finishing the study I went to Selborne alone and stayed there only four days. My landlady, Mrs Gibson, said to me,* 'You are the first person to stay overnight here'. To hear that I was overjoyed. Nishitani-Taizo did come to Selborne during his stay in England from 1923 to 1924, but his stay was only in the daytime. * I found later that it was not true.
