About General Ophthalmology
For anyone troubled by general eye discomfort
This covers everyday eye problems such as redness, itching and fatigue. We examine and treat everything from common conditions like conjunctivitis, styes (hordeolum) and chalazion, to eye symptoms linked to systemic disease. If you're not sure which department to visit for an eye symptom, please start here.
Symptoms
- Redness in the eye
- Itchy or gritty feeling
- Easily tired or heavy-feeling eyes
- Excess discharge
- Sensitivity to light
- A sense that vision has declined
Many of these symptoms come from common causes such as conjunctivitis or eye strain, but a sudden, strong onset of glare or reduced vision can sometimes signal something else. Rather than waiting it out, an examination to identify the cause supports earlier treatment.
Treatment
- Visual acuity & eye pressure testingChecks basic visual function and eye pressure, screening for changes in vision or risks such as glaucoma.
- Fundus examinationObserves the condition of the retina and optic nerve to support early detection of diseases with few symptoms.
- Slit-lamp examinationUses a microscope to closely examine the cornea, conjunctiva and eyelids for inflammation or injury.
- Diagnosis-based treatmentCommon conditions such as conjunctivitis, styes and chalazion are mainly treated with eye drops or ointment, tailored to the symptoms.

Ongoing Care
- Even if symptoms improve, don't stop treatment on your own — follow the frequency and duration prescribed by your doctor. If symptoms worsen or something feels unusual, consult us before continuing.
- Avoid rubbing your eyes, and be mindful of everyday hygiene, such as using clean towels and hands around your eyes.
- Even without symptoms, feel free to consult us about anything that concerns you. Identifying the cause through examination makes it easier to plan future treatment or monitoring.
A Note From the Director
Symptoms you might be tempted to “wait and see” about are often exactly the ones worth having examined. Redness and itching are common, but the right treatment depends on the cause. If something feels off, please feel free to consult us.

Access, Appointments & Visiting Us
We do not take phone appointments for either first or follow-up visits. No appointment is needed — patients are seen in the order they arrive during our consultation hours. If a doctor determines during your visit that a detailed examination is needed, we will arrange the next appointment for you before you leave.
We welcome patients from Hikone and across Shiga Prefecture, as well as from Kyoto City, Takatsuki and Hirakata (Osaka), and the Nagoya (Aichi) area.
