Section Ellobium, Mexico
Bush
F. fulgens is native to western Mexico, at an altitude between 1,450 and 2,300 m
1).
It makes an upright bush and grows fast in favorable climates. The bright
orange tube is very long (up to 13 cm) and individual flowers last very
long.
F. fulgens has very large, light green, velvety leaves.
The photo on the right shows the comparison of the leaves of F. fulgens and three cultivars.
You can see how large the leave of F. fulgens is, but "12 cm" is on the smaller side.

F. fulgens has tuberous roots, like dahlia and sweet potato.
The photo on the far left is a young plant grown from a seed sowed in November, 2007. The photo was taken in April 2008.You can see the seedling has developed a small tuberous root.
The photo on the immediate left is a 2-year old plant.
The tuberous root helps F. fulgens survive our harsh summer. You can prune the plant to the crown, then stop watering to dry up the compost (as shown in the above-right photo).
After summer, you can start watering. Then the plant will raise shoots and regrow.
