Yonesaka Line closed due to heavy rain disaster

The Yonesaka Line sustained damage from the heavy rains on August 3, 2022, including the washing away of the railway bridge. Even now the Imaizumi-Sakamachi section is still closed, with no restoration work being carried out at all. This is a serious situation that could lead to the line being closed. On October 16, 2024, more than two years after the heavy rains disaster, I traveled the Yonesaka Line using replacement buses etc. to see the current situation, which we will report on this page.

Two posters announcing the replacement buses and the service information about Yonesaka Line posted at Sakamachi Station.

The first train running near Minami-Yonezawa Station. Between Yonezawa and Imaizumi, a special timetable is being operated using Kiha 110 trains etc.

Tenoko Station was not operated a train for over two years. It's hard to believe that it was bustling when the 9600-type steam locomotives and the Kiha 52,58 and 28 were in operation.

The Yonesaka Line tracks are covered with grass and the rails can not be visible.

The Yonesaka Line platform at Sakamachi Station is also covered in grass and the rails are rusted red.

When I visited the Yonesaka Line for the first time since the heavy rain disaster, the line was covered with grass and the rails were rusted, and it will take a lot of money, effort, and time to restore it. I was the only one who took the first replacement bus from Imaizumi Station, and there were only a few passengers from stations along the way, so I felt that the suspension of service for the past two years has caused local residents to turn away from trains. I hope that the Yonesaka Line restoration work will begin as soon as possible and the entire line will be reopened!
Let's send our support to the JR Yonesaka Line! A page in Oguni Town where you can send messages of support to the Yonesaka Line, which is currently closed due to heavy rain!)
