- Aims of this lesson:
The main aim of this lesson is an overall summary of a lesson whose theme is based on AIDS. The instructor does not want to finish the lesson just for learning English structures and usages of vocabulary. He uses an Academy Award winning movie called "Philadelphia" in order to help reduce students' unnecessary fear of the disease. He also hopes the lesson would build in the students' mind the consciousness of the importance of the basic human rights.
The subcategory of the main aim is as follows:
a. To give students an example of a homophobic person who eventually became a buddy of an AIDS patient by showing some excerpts from the movie, "Philadelphia."
b. To show the students how a homophobic man (the black lawyer, Denzel Washington) could change after coming to terms with his own prejudice.
c. To let students think about how the relationshiop between the characters has changed, ie, the degree of physical contact the characters are comfortable with has changed.
d. To let students avoid misunderstanding toward AIDS.
- Teaching Aids:
a. Videotaped excerpts from "Philadelphia"
b. Handouts containing scripts from the scenes
- Procedures:
b. Introduction of "Philadelphia": The teacher gives handouts to the students and explains the outline of the mocie.
c. Screening: The teacher stops the vido before each scene starts. He describes the plot of each scene; the important notices and the critical points.
d. After the screening: The teacher asks the students some questions following the handouts and let them write how they felt after watching the video.
e. Closing Comments: The teacher sums up the whole lesson by teling the students to get rid of the prejudicial judgement which comes from an unnecessary fear of unknown matter.
