The concept of cohesion is a semantic one; it refers to relations of meaning that exist within the text, and that define it as a text.
Cohesision occurs where the INTERPRETATION of some element in the discourse is dependent on that of another. The one PRESUPPOSES the other, in the sense that it cannot be effectively decoded except by recourse to it.

(a)Referential Marker(照応符号)
@There is a book on the desk. It is mine.
AThe bright child is curious about life and reality. The dull child is far less curious.
(b)substitutional Marker(代用符号)
I'm looking for a red dress. --- How about this one?
(c)Elliptic Marker(省略符号)
A week has seven day. A year [0] twelve months.

(d)Lexical Cohesive Marker(語彙連結符号)
@Masao has bought a new Toyota. He really loves the car.
AIt will be useful to bear in mind two general categories when thinking about the choice of words.
