会場のある今井町は「重要伝統的建造物群保存地区」に指定され、地区内では、新しく家を建てる際や、既存の建物の修繕方法についても、法律で厳しく制限されており、例えば、外壁がタイル貼りで、アルミサッシの窓を使用している建物を修繕する際には、漆喰壁に塗りなおし、木格子窓にしなくてはならない。このような修景により、今井町は「古い建物」と真っ白で美しい漆喰壁の「新しく古い建物」が見られる町並みになっている。展覧会場の細川町家は二軒長屋建の空家で、大正から昭和初期に建てられたとされれいるが、外観はタイル貼りで、内装は合板や石膏材でなされ、人が住まなくなって約15年以上経過していた。現代の感覚では歴史的建造物とは思えない建物ではあるが、室内の内装からは昭和の中頃から終わりにかけての時代を感じさせていた。展示準備にあたっては今井町を何度も訪れ建物の取材と調査、近隣の住民への聞き込み、会場の清掃、町並みの保存運動の歴史を調べるなどのアプローチを重ねた後、内装材を剥がした。剥がすと、下から建築当初の土壁や煙を出すための吹き抜け天井が露出した作品は、剥ぎ取った会場の内装材と、庭掃除で除去した植物を丁寧に模写し、絵巻に仕立てたものである。絵巻は昭和時代の一層分の資料となる。取り去ってなくなった内装材の層が、絵画として保存され、取り去って露出した建設当初の古い層が眼前にある状態を展示した。		Before paintng, I asked neighbors about the family who wrere used to live in the house for a while. And, I studied the history of the town where the houses are located. The house was so dirty, and the courtyard of it was covered with rank weeds and ivies, because the house has long been unoccupied. I cleaned there with neighbors. Plywood and Plaster Board were used as interior materials in the house. When I stripped off these walls and ceiling, the original mud wall and the open ceiling were exposed. Pictures and a school timetable remained on the original wall. On the handscroll I painted the materials I stripped off the wall. This painting is the record of the materials that covered the walls of the house. This handscroll was displayed in front of the original interior.
