Shinnyo Tobo

One of the oldest Shigaraki ware, gTanetsubo (Seed Pot)h is made with Shigaraki-Clay
which contains a high temperature grog that sustains large pots when fired.
The pot has good ventilation and the clay has many minerals.
Years ago, it was used to hold seeds and they would not rot or grow.
The pot can also hold water without leaking.
Shigaraki-Clay has various qualities that support the many variations of
Shigaraki's ceramics. The clay can bear high temperatures
and is used for making many pots, teapots and more.
My company is using the clay that has these qualities
and we are mainly making tableware and other materials.
All products are fired at 1300Ž and the clay forms a strong body.
It is vitrified and forms a hard body.
Shigaraki-Clay is unique when it is well fired.
The clay surface is rough, as the feldspar, iron and so on are melted and puffed.
The most famous product of my company is hKo-Shigaraki (Old Shigaraki style)h
which has a cheerful warm glaze.
It is formed with Shigaraki's indigenous clay.
When it is well fired, the clay's surface is changed to red
(Hi-iro, in Japanese: colored like a fire), (Koge, in Japanese: iron glaze)
and (Vidro, pronunciation is beadro, in Portugese: Ash glaze).
It is the most famous of the Shigaraki ware.
It has many moving traceson the surface of the wares,
as it is decorated with the dipper, named gShaku-Gakeh.
Not only the glazing, but also the firing gives you a more spectacular product.
We are using fine Shigaraki-Clay
which is expressed to the maximum by our glazing techniques.
We decorate with gKesho-Gakeh,
gTurkish-Blue (vivid Persian blue glaze)h,
gHagi (in Japanese: Ash glaze)h,
gShino (in Japanese: feldspar white glaze)h,
gOribe (in Japanese: bronze green glaze)h
and others onto a white foundation.
We also utilize gE-Tsuke (in Japanese: drawing the pictures)h
on the clay when making new products. gLearn a lesson from the past.h
Our desire is to produce new products using the character of Shigaraki-Clay,
while maximizing the traditional techniques.
