Aikido Shinbujuku Dojo

WELCOME TO SHINBUJUKU DOJO (AIKIKAI)

Aikido history
Morihei Ueshiba(often referred to by his title 'O Sensei' or 'Great Teacher') sought out and studied under masters in many traditional martial arts, eventually becoming expert at a number of styles of jujutsu (old Japanese martial art), kenjutsu (sword) and sojutsu (spear). He created Aikido as a path to universal harmony and world peace, believing that Aikido was a way of attaining this goal and that violence and aggression could be turned aside by harmony of spirit.

Shinbujuku Dojo
Shinbujuku Dojo was opened in 2000 by Junichi Shirakami(7 Dan), who has been practicing Aikido for more than since 1964. The dojo (martial arts school) is affiliated with the Aikido Association of Japan.
The Dojo has since grown steadily through the years. The attendance has now increased from less than 20 students to more than 50 students in the adult class and 50 students in the children class. It has a good proportion of men and ladies in the class. We had students that grown up from our children class and are now joining their big brothers, sisters, uncles and aunties in the adult class. It is just like a big family with everyone in the class very friendly and helpful.
Chief Instructor Junichi Shirakami has instructed a full schedule of classes to all levels.

Children class
The children class has more than 30 students. Training has always been fun for them. Children between the aged of 6 to 12 years train together. Many are bothers and sisters. The class has always been conducted in a strict and yet lively manner.

Aikido practice
Aikido focuses not on punching or kicking opponents, but rather on using their own energy to gain control of them or to throw them away from you. It is not a static art, but places great emphasis on motion and the dynamics of movement. Aikido is a highly refined martial art, developed last century as a means of self-defense and spiritual training. Aikido develops coordination of mind and body. Through its philosophy and techniques, Aikido brings us into harmony with our environment, other people and ourselves. Unlike many martial arts, Aikido requires no advantage in strength or speed, and is practiced successfully by people of all ages and abilities. Aikido practice develops flexibility, coordination, concentration, improved health and fitness, effective communication skills and self-esteem. The concentration and discipline required for Aikido training brings focus to our daily lives. Aikido challenges us to improve our skills and attempt new things. By achieving these skills, we gain confidence in our ability to maintain stability whenever we encounter difficulty. The first thing you notice about someone is their attitude. If your attitude and thoughts are positive, your life reflects positive results.

Location/How to get there

How do you train yourself?
The Aikidoist develops a relaxed posture in which the weight of the body is directed towards its physiologic center in the lower abdomen. Gravity is no longer a force to be overcome. Rather it serves to support and stabilize posture. As a result, ordinary movement assumes an appearance of grace and economy. The effects of centering are mental as well as physical. In addition vitality increases, the senses are sharpened, and one is less affected by the irritations and annoyances of daily living. This state is referred to in Japan as having 腹(hara), or strong 気(ki). It is a manifestation of the inner quality which aids the student of Aikido to develop to his or her fullest potential in every area of life.
