Abstract:
A process is proposed to produce Ti powder directly from TiCl4 gas, where the reductant Mg dissolved in the molten salt reacts with Ti chloride also dissolved in it. Three experimental arrangements confirmed that Mg in the salt could reduce Ti chlorides and prepare metallic titanium. Comparing with the Kroll process, the heterogeneous nucleation and its growth to the aggregates were minimized and the well-isolated fine particles were obtained. The powder morphology changed from the needle-like to the round shape by rising the reduction temperature. Ti particle size was the larger when the molten salts with the larger solubility of titanium chlorides were used. The applicability of this proposal for industrial production and the suitability of this powder for powder metallurgy are discussed.
