Abstract:
|
The corrosion-resistive intermetallic compound Fe3Si was non-electrolytically coated pure iron and mild steels. The homogenous Fe3Si layer successfully deposited by the disproportional reaction between Si and Si4+ ions, using solid silicon and the molten salt composed of NaCl-KCl-NaF-Na2SiF6-SiO2. The layer of Fe3Si single phase with 24+-1 mol%Si grew thicker than 200mm by immersing for a few hours at 973-1173K. The Si penetration from the Fe3Si layer into the a-Fe substrate was small due to the slow diffusion of Si in a-Fe. The fast Fe diffusion in the Fe3Si layer left the Kirkendall holes. The mechanisms of layer growth and defects formation were studied experimentally. |
