JEVONS, W. S., AUTOGRAPH LETTER SIGNED, A letter of 3 pages from Jevons to Leone Levi, written from Manchester,

ジェヴォンズ、署名入り自筆書簡。
用紙を二つ折りにして、表・裏を使い3ページに書かれている。紙の縁が補強されている。
宛て人のLeone Levi(1821-1888)は、イタリア生まれで英国に帰化したユダヤ系法律家・統計家。チュービンゲン大学の学位を取得。リバプールに居住していた（wikipediaによる）。
本文にあるように、ジェヴォンズは1874年4月に３ケ月余の大陸旅行（Jevons,1886によると、フランスとイタリー）から帰英し、溜まっていた手紙の返事を書いたようである。
「返事を必要とする手紙が他に沢山あるが」と弟トーマスに宛てた手紙の冒頭にある。
本書簡と同日付の書簡が他に二つある。一つは、今あげたニューヨーク在と思われる弟（七男）トーマスに宛てた、次兄ハーバートの死を知らせた書簡である（Jevons,1886,p.299）。 いま一つ、Alexander
Macmillanに宛てた手紙がある（注１）。
なお、本書簡はジェヴォンズの妻が編集した本にも、ブラックが編んだ書簡集にも収められていないと思われる。
内容は、回覧雑誌（論文）を手元に留めたことを謝するもの。「試読」結果を下に掲げる。下線を施したのは、解読に疑義のある語。
カナダの古書店から購入。説明に junk letter と自ら商品価値を貶める記述があったように、低い値付けがなされていた。

of the Bradford meeting
of the British assoc.
lying here, its receipt even
having here I fear quite

&c, that it is impossible to
have all fermented & get
occasionally important paper
or bulletin will be overlooked.
I write therefore to beg
you to excuse what way
have several neglect of your
circular. I should have been
happy to give a statement
of my opinion in the
points suggested but if
I read the circular aright |
the answers were required
before the end of last
February. It was remains for
me therefore to hope that
the committee will be
able to see their way to
distinct conclusions in
questions of such difficult
and importance.
