DETECTION OF ACTIVE OXYGEN SPECIES IN TIO2 PHOTOCATALYSIS

Yoshio NOSAKA

Abstract

The studies on detecting active oxygen species such as superoxide radicals, OH radicals, and singlet oxygen in photo irradiated TiO2 powder suspension systems will be reviewed based on the recent publications by the author's group. The superoxide radicals could be detected by a luminol chemiluminescence probe method. To analyze OH radicals, a fluorescence probe method with terephthalic acid was employed. Singlet molecular oxygen was detected by its phosphorescence at the wavelength of 1270 nm. The analysis of the behavior of these active oxygen species in TiO2 photocatalytic reactions suggested that one should take account of the contribution of these species carefully on establishing the precise reaction mechanism in TiO2 photocatalytic systems.
