*The climbing kiln of Maruyoshiseitou was designated a Modern Cultural Heritage in 2007
Shigaraki, one of the Six Ancient Kiln, has prospered over the years as a pottery town. Today, a path known as the "Kiln Walk" winds through the center of town. Visitors are able to stroll through the streets of Shigaraki, surrounded by the old climbing kilns that were constantly spewing smoke during the town's heyday, the old houses and workshops that have been silent witnesses to the town's activity over the years, and walls made from kiln furniture with thick coats of ash from being fired over and over again.
