Unlike an ordinary bamboo shakuhachi, no liner is used in the bore of the
plastic shakuhachi, nor are the instruments individually tuned; thus tuning
may not be as precise as in the former case. However, great care is taken
to produce as well-tuned instruments as possible. As this shakuhachi can
be washed after use without damage to the bore, it therefore represents
a hygenic alternative for schools and other places where several persons
can be expected to use the same instrument. It is also suited to beginners.
With its modern appearance, it is popular among young people. The colours
(for example, off-white, yellow, pink, blue, silver, black, etc) of the
instrument can be tailored according to the wishes of the customer.
Finger-hole diametres can be made smaller to suit women with slim fingers
