たった1人のメンバーチェンジだけで、半世紀近くの活動を続けている、グループ史上最も屈強なグループ The Dells。シカゴからおよそ15マイルにあるイリノイ州・ハーヴェイの Thornton Township 高校で、学友５人が集まり The El-Rays を53年に結成し、これが母体となった。メンバーは、Johnny Junior Funches・Marvin Junior・Verne Allison・Mickey McGill・Chuck Barksdale ・Lucius McGill（35.～）。街角や校庭、ときには駄菓子屋の店先で練習を積んでいった。時にはあまりの喧しさにアパートの住民にバケツの水をかけられたりもしたが、彼らの熱意は鈍らなかった。Lucius McGill が、スペイン語の教科書からヒントを得て The El-Rays（王を意味する）と命名、53年のことである。グループは、The Moonglows・The Dominoes・The Ravens などを聞いて育った世代で、間もなく Darling I know・Christine を書き始めている。54年春、オーディションを受けるためにシカゴの Chess の新しいオフィスを訪れ、彼らのオリジナでシングルデビューすることとなった。５月の第４週に、Darling I know・Christine が Checker からリリースされる。当時 Leonard Chess は、あまり儲からないレコード会社をやめてタクシードライバーにでもなろうかと考えていたが、Marvin Junior の声を聞いて驚嘆するとともに感動し、もう一度会社をやる気になったという。The Spaniels スタイルのバラード Darling I know は、３人の素晴しいボーカリストと優れた唱法を持っていることを示したが、商業的には成功とは言えなかった。グループは、マークハムにある小さなバーやレストランで、ひと晩２ドルとハンバーガーでライブを始めた。１カ月後にはバーベキューと２ドルになったが。この頃、Lucius McGill が脱退している。その頃、地元ですでにプロとして活動していた The Moonglows と親交を深め、彼等から演奏についての指導を受けている。この指導は彼らをシカゴに戻る十分な自身を与えた。55年春、グループは再びシカゴを訪れ Vee-Jay と契約することとなった。Vivian Carter の兄弟 Calvin Carter は El-Rays を大変気に入ったがグループの名前を変更すべきだと感じ、地元のリゾートエリア Wisconsin Dells にちなんで The Dells と改名した。55年４月、Tell the world（Vern Allison 作曲）がリリースされた。当時、友人の Harvey Fuqua はまったくそのことを知らなかったという。また彼らは、売れた数より多くのシングルを人にプレゼントして回ったといわれている。いずれにしろヒットにはいたっていない。Dreams of contentment（Vern Allison 作曲）は前作よりかは売れたようである。この曲は、Marvin Junior・Johnny Funches が楽しいステージを終えたその夜に書いた歌がベースとなっている。この頃、Chuck Barksdale はシンシナティで人気のあった Otis Williams and The Charms に加入するためにグループを去った。56年７月に、名作 Oh what a nite をリリース、しかし発表当初はほとんど話題にもならず、The Dells の名前はまだまだ小さな存在だった。グループはすでに3枚のシングルを失敗し、苦境に立たされていたが、その頃ニューヨークにいた The Moonglows から、自分達のシングルがラジオで頻繁に流されている事を聞き、初めてニューヨークでヒットしている事を知ったという。美しいメロディーと「コールアンドレスポンス」なコーラスを特徴としたこの Oh what a nite の大ヒットで、グループはニューヨークのアポロ劇場へ出演するようになる。この頃、Chuck Barksdale が再加入している。56年11月10日のビルボード誌の年間ベストセラー第４位に Oh what a nite は選出され、ディスクジョッキー部門第５位・ジュークボックス部門第５位に届いた。グループは57年から58年にかけて、Why do you have to go（Vern Allison 作曲）と Pain in my heart（Marvin Junior・Johnny Funches 共作）といったバラードをリリースしヒットを獲得した。しかし58年の後半、フィラデルフィア公演の移動中に自動車事故に会い、Chuck Barksdale はフロントガラスを割り車外に放り出され、Mickey McGill は足の骨を折り入院するという事態が発生しグループ活動が不可能となってしまう。残されたメンバーは動揺しつつも、残された公演を、The Isley Brothers・The Flamingos らと何とかスケジュールをこなしていった。事故後の２年間はほとんどグループ活動をしていないが、Vee-Jay は59年の終わりに Dry your eyes（Vern Allison 作曲）・Oh what a nite を再発し、グループのシングルを発表し続けた。ラジオからはグループの歌声もあまり聞かれなかったが、60年２月１日付のビルボード誌は、Oh what a nite を「グループは、おさえ気味のシャウトで歌うミディアムテンポのバラードを、彼等自身の努力により見事に戻ってきた。満足のいくシングルだ」とレビューした。この頃メンバーは結婚に、仕事にとほぼ回復しつつあった。59年、グループは再びスターダムを得よう活動を再開する。Junior Funches がこの時にグループを去っている。シカゴのバーで、グループと除隊後間もない Johnny Carter（長年の Flamingos ボーカリスト）とのミーティングで、彼の加入が決定し、翌日のフィラデルフィアでの Curt Stewart のバッキングに参加することにした。グループは、自身の公演ではなく予備のボーカリストとしてのキャリアにとまどっていたが、Curt Stewart（Sarah Vaughn を管理した）の音楽指導を受けたグループは、The Four Aces and The Hi-Lo's のようなモダンで調和のとれたハーモニーを熟達させていき、その後のグループの大きな武器となる。Curt Stewart は次に、グループを Dinah Washington と組ませてオーディションを取り決め、59年にリリースされた彼女のアルバム Tears and laughter に４つの歌で参加した。この仕事をきっかけにグループは数多くのバッキング（ほとんどがクレジットがないままに）に参加する。62年、グループは Vee-Jay と Chess 間の取引で Argo（Chess の子会社）へ移籍する。 Argo からの最初のシングル God bless the child は素晴らしいブルースとポップスが調和したアレンジだったが、ヒットにはならなかった。当時流行していたダンスブームにのった次のシングル Bossa Nova bird がなんとかチャートの第97位となる。その後も2枚のシングルを Argo からリリース後、再び Chess・Vee-Jay 間の取引で、Vee-Jay に戻っている。Johnny Carter・Chuck Barksdale とともに、65年４月に、Oh what a nite のリメイクと、Tom Jones のカバー It's not unusual を Vee-Jay からリリースした。 65年６月にリリースした Stay in my corner がビルボードチャート第122位だったが、Ｒ＆Ｂチャートで第23位（Oh what a nite から９年ぶりにのＲ＆Ｂチャートイン）となった。66年の夏に Cadet（Chess の子会社）へ移籍し、O-o I love you でポップチャート第61位・Ｒ＆Ｂチャート第22位というグループのヒット行進がはじまる最初の１曲となった。続く There is（オリジナルは、O-o I love you の裏面だった）が、ポップチャート第20位・Ｒ＆Ｂチャート第11位に届いた（グループの今日までの最大のポップスヒット）。 The Dells が成功していった頃、ブラックミュージックはソウルと呼ばれる時期へと入っていった。68年の夏、Stay in my Corner をリメイクし、Ｒ＆Ｂチャート第１位・ポップチャート第10位に送り込む。これは６分を超える長さの力作となった。Always Together（ポップチャート第18位・Ｒ＆Ｂチャート第３位）・I can sing a rainbow（Ｂ面は Love is blue・ポップチャート第22位・Ｒ＆Ｂチャート第５位）などのヒットを次々とリリースし、リズムアンドブルースからソウルへの掛け橋となった。69年に Oh what a nite を、まるで The Moonglows のような長い語りから始まるグループの新しい解釈によるリメイクをリリースしている。Bobby Miller が製作し、Charles Stepney（Rotary Connection 所属）がアレンジを担当したこの作品は、グループの魅力を充分に引き出す事に成功した。これは、その年のハードロック・バブルガムミュージック（低年齢向けのポップス）を遥かに凌駕し、チャートに新風を送り込んだ。69年９月27日には、グループは全米のＲ＆Ｂチャート第１位のシングルを10枚も持っていた。それには、一連のリメイク作品、Nadine（The Coronets）・Long lonely nights（Lee Andrews and the Hearts）・Glory of love（The Five Keys）などがあった。60年代を通じ、グループは自分達のためと同じくらい、Jerry Butler・Etta James・Wade Flemons・Joann Garrett・Ted Taylor・The Players らといった他のミュージシャンのバッキングのレコーディングに時間を費やした。Barbara Lewis のナンバーワンヒット Hello stranger（63年）には Barbara Lewis and the Dells とクレジットされている。少なくとも60年代のグループの関わったレコーディングの記録詳細は相当な数に及ぶと考えられている。グループは、24枚以上のポップヒットと43枚以上のＲ＆Ｂヒットを持ち、現在も現役で活動を続けている。
