clarinet ; Emmett Berry, Harry Edison and Eugene "Snooky" Young - trumpets ; Ted Donelly, J.J.Johnson, Eli Robinson and Dicky Wells - trombones ; Count Basie - piano ; Freddie Green - guitar ; Rodney Richardson - double bass.

SENT FOR YOU YESTERDAY and I AIN
T MAD AT YOU were recorded on May 14, 1945 in Radio City, New York.
AN OLD MANUSCRIPT was transcribed in Liederkranz Hall, New York City, slightly later than the May 14 titles,but all by asimilar personnel to: - Jimmy Powell and Earle Warren - alto saxophones ; Buddy Tate and Eli "Lucky" Thompson - tenor saxophones : Buck Clayton, Harry Edison, Karl George, Ed Lewis and Eugene "Snooky" Young - trumpets ; Ted Donnelly, J.J.Johnson, Eli Robinson and Dicky Wells - trombones ; Rudy Rutherford - baritone saxophone / clarinet ; Count Basie - piano ; Freddie Green - guitar; Rodney Richardson - double bass ; Shadow Wilson - druma. Vocalists as indicated.

LADY BE GOOD was recorded at a WNEW broadcast on April 5, 1947, and featured Roy Eldridge - trumpet ; Jean "Illinois" Jacquet - tenor saxophone ; Count Basie - piano, with Bernard "Buddy" Rich - drums.

ANDY'S BLUES was transcribed at the Avadon Ballroom, Los Angeles, California, by a similar personnel to the GOTTA BE THIS OR THAT personnel excepting that Paul Gonsalves replaces Illinois Jacquet.

THEMES/MOVE/GOLDEN BULLET were transcribed in New York City,Spring, 1951, by Count Basie - piano ; Wardell Gray - tenor saxophone ; Marshall Royal - clarinet ; Clark Terry - trumpet ; Freddie Green - guitar ; Jimmy Lewis - double bass ; Gus Johnson - drums.


 1945年〜51年迄のエア・チェックの中から編集されたものです。通常四人のトランペット・セクションに五人を配したブラスは強烈です。このアルバムのハイライトである「ANDY'S BLUES」では、フレディ・グリーン(g)の蒸気機関車の驀進が頭をよぎる力強いプレイに熱くなります。更にポール・ゴンザルヴェスも随分と熱の入ったブローを展開、ベイシーの溌剌としたピアノもたっぷりと聴けます。ベイシー・サウンドの魅力がぎっしりと詰まったトラック、生で聴くことが出来れば気絶しそうな物凄い音です。
 「LADY BE GODD」のドラムスはバディー・リッチとくれば、リズム・セクションに一層拍車を掛けます。ベイシーも乗りまくってます。「GOLDEN BULLET」でも、WARDELL GRAY(ts)にCLARK TERRYのトランペットがハードなプレイで釘付けにします。この頃のスタジオ録音は余り魅力を感じませんが、ライヴの熱気がビンビンと伝わるこのアルバム、凄い一枚です。
