　「ジャズの伝統を継承する」をコンセプトに創設されたウイントン・マルサリス＆リンカーン・センター・ジャズ・オーケストラが、ジョン・コルトレーンのスピリチュアル・ジャズの最高傑作「至上の愛」を、ビッグ・バンド・アレンジメントによって録音しました。デューク・エリントンから大きな影響を受けたウイントン・マルサリスのアレンジメントは、確かにエリントン色が濃厚で、コルトレーン音楽に更なる格調を築き上げ、品格に溢れた感動的な演奏を展開、実に重い内容となっています。
　尚、ウイントンは「至上の愛」を、１９９２年１２月３・４日、新宿ピットインにおいて、コルトレーン・グループの一員であったエルヴィン・ジョーンズ(d)、そしてマーカス・ロバーツ(p)、レジナルド・ヴィール(b)と共にライヴ録音しています。彼のトランペットは、まるで己の一器官のように情感のおもむくままに吹きまくる成熟したプレイできらめき、トランペット奏者としての実力を存分に発揮した一枚で、併せて聴くことをお奨めします。(February 13, 2005)
