　２０世紀、アメリカが生んだ偉大な芸術「ジャズ」も、本家アメリカでは随分と評価が低いのに驚きました。その証が、大型CDショップのジャズ・フロアーが狭いこと。しかも、陳列棚の多くは、ベニー・グッドマンが占め、この辺にも人種差別の片鱗が伺えるようです。(ロサンゼルス、ラスベガス)
　このアルバムは、長編ドキュメンタリー映画「KCジャズの侍たち」をビデオ化したもの。ジャズの記録フィルムとしては、１９５８年のニューポート・ジャズ・フェスティバルを捉えた「真夏の夜のジャズ」くらいしか思い浮かびませんから貴重です。しかも興味深い内容に、その価値は絶大！
　撮影は、１９７４年３月２２日、カンザス・シティのユニオン・ホール。カウント・ベイシー、ジェイ・マクシャン、ビック・ジョー・ターナーの三人を軸に、KCジャズに縁の深いミュージシャンが、久し振りの再会を喜び合い、この街の良き時代についての思い出話や証言、そしてプレイを繰り広げます。
　カウント・ベイシー・オーケストラは、１９７５年３月２１日前後に撮られたカンザス州立大学講堂におけるコンサートなどが収められ、またジェイ・マクシャンが、ヴォーカルとオーケストラでとても楽しげに演奏する様も観もの聴物。そして圧巻はジョー・ターナーで、ブルースの塊あふれる豪放なヴォーカルに惹き込まれてしまいます。レスター・ヤングやチャーリー・パーカー、若き日のベイシー、ビッグ・ジョーのフィルム・クリップも挿入されていてファン必見の作品です。(August 12, 2004)
