The 7th Kayabuki Ongakudo Competition for Piano Duet

Competition Rules.
No previous winner of this competition can compete.
Applicants should be at least 14 years of age by April 2nd, 2010.

There are Two Competition Categories.
Category A is for Piano Duet ( one piano, four hands )
Category B is for 2 Pianos.


How to Enter.

All applications as well as the recorded performances should be sent to:

All applications must be received by Friday, July 16th.
Applications must contain the completed entry form (enclosed)
An entry fee of 35.000\ is payable by bank transfer, the day of transfer to be stated on the application form.

Candidates who fail to pass the first round (the tape audition) of the competition will be refunded 20.000\ of the entry fee.

Auditions for the first round of the competition will be judged by recorded submissions. Recordings must be labeled with the names of both competitors and must begin immediately on side A .
The mediums of CD, DAT, MD or Cassette Tape are acceptable.
The recordings must be received by the 20th of July.
Finalists from WFMIC or NHK Mainichi competitions do not need to take part in the first round, they may immediately proceed to the second elimination.

If you are accepted into the second elimination round, ( open to the public ) you will be asked to play either on October 9th, or 10th. Overseas candidates who can prove foreign residency, can submit a recording of the required pieces for the second elimination, if attendance in person is not possible.

The final round will be held on November 6th and 7th, all finalists will be expected to attend on both days.

Prizes.

Competitors eliminated at the second round will receive a gCertificate of Participationh.
All finalists will receive a gCertificate of Finalisth
The gGrand Prizeh is a Lufthansa round trip airplane ticket between Japan and Germany, limited season.
First Prize is a gold coin by the Austrian Mint.
Second Prize is a gift certificate for JR Isetan in the value of Yen 50.000 (for the pair)
Third Prize is a Gift certificate for JR Isetan in the value of Yen 40.000 (for the pair) and a Glass ornament by Hiraoka
Other prizes will be contributed by competition sponsors.

On November 7rd, after some final auditions and deliberation by the jury, the winners will be announced, followed by the prize giving ceremony and a public recital at the Kayabuki Ongaku-do by selected winners.
All finalists will be asked to participate in a concert at Muromachi-kouji Hiroba in JR Kyoto Station on November 5th (detailes to be announced)

Contestants will be informed of their successful candidature in good time and the competition organizers will be happy to help and answer any questions they may have.
Competition organizers will be able to help in Japanese, German or English.
There will be no pay for any performances.
No recordings will be returned.

Performance Requirements for the 7th Competition for Piano Duet Nantan-shi Goma, Japan 2010

œFor Piano Duet (one piano, four hands)

For the audition by tape

(cassette tape, mini disk, CD, DAT acceptable)

Chose and send your recorded performance of 2 pieces from:
šJ. Brahms: Hungarian Dances ( from all 21pieces) or
šA. Dvorak: Slavonic Dances ( from either Op. 48 or Op. 78)
The total recording time shall not exceed 6 minutes
You may choose one piece from each composer or both pieces from one composer.

For the second elimination

Be prepared to play any one piece from the below suggestions: A, B or C,
in addition to any one or more pieces of your own choice (original compositions for piano duet)
The total playing time shall not exceed 12 minutes.

(A) S. Rachmaninov From 6 Pieces Op.11: No.4, gWaltzh
(B) S. Barber From gSouvenirsh Op.28: No.5, gHesitation Tangoh
(C) E. Grieg From gNorwegian Dancesh No.4, D-Dur

For the final audition
Be prepared to play any one piece from the below suggestions A or B, in addition to pieces of your own choice. The total should be a gMini Programh consisting of original works for piano duet. The total playing time shall not exceed 25 minutes.

J.Brahms Variation over a Theme by Schumann
R. Schumann Pictures from the EastOp.85 (all pieces)
The gMini Programh should contain works of different character and composers and should be appealing to the jury and to an audience. Works performed in a preceding elimination shall not be part of this final program.
Separate movements of larger works are acceptable.




œFor 2 pianos


For the audition by tape

Chose and send your recorded performance of 2 pieces from:
(A) M. Clementi: SonataOp.12-5 1st movement@Allegro assai
(B) J.C.Bach: Sonata G-Dur 1st movement


For the second elimination
Be prepared to play any one piece from below suggestions A or B in addition to one or more pieces of your choice. (original compositions for 2 pianos)
The total playing time shall not exceed 12 minutes.

(A) S.Rachmaninov Suite Op.17-No.2 G-Dur Waltz
(B) A.Arenski Suite Op.15-No.2 Waltz

For the final audition

Be prepared to play any one piece from the below suggestions A,B,C in addition to one or more compositions of your own choice. The total should be a gMini Recitalh consisting of compositions originally written for 2 pianos. The total playing time shall not exceed 25 minutes.

R. Schumann 6 Etudes in the form of a canon Op.56 (6 pieces)
R. Schumann Andante and Variation Op.46
F. Chopin Rondo Op.73 C-Dur
Works performed in a previous elimination shall not be part of this program.
The program should contain works of different character and composers and should be appealing to the jury and to an audience. Separate movements of larger works are acceptable.



No repeats are to be played.
Any edition is acceptable.
Performance by memory is not required but encouraged.
