Many foreign tourists come to Nara to see Great Buddha statue and tame deer, and go home without visiting the interesting historic "old town" district called Nara-machi. They don't know what they've missed!
In Naramachi you will experience the atmosphere of old times created by old "machiya" (historic merchant townhouses) and small alleys full of interesting sights. Unfortunately this area is not easy for foreign tourists to explore by themselves. You need someone who knows the area inside out with the knowledge of Japanese customs and tradition.
In order to help those who want to explore this historic area, this three-hour guided walking tour was started in 2006 by Yoshiko Hatcho, who loves Naramachi and has worked as a professional guide for over 20 years.
The tour ends in the vicinity of Todaiji Temple and Kasuga Shrine around 13:00 so that you can walk to these major spots of interest in Nara after the tour. By including this tour in your plan, you can enjoy Nara fully in one day.
